A Marcella Delight Gruelle Doll

As her watched his daughter Marcella play using only her imaginations. Johnny Gruelle was inspired to write and illustrate a series of children’s books featuring a young girl’s adventures with her rag doll. Although Johnny Gruelle was already a successful artist and book illustrator, this particular series of books would capture America’s heart and become a permanent part of our culture.

While Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy were the central characters in the series. Marcella retained a prominent place in the stories.

The Gruelle family always acknowledged that Marcella was her father’s muse – the inspiration for Raggedy Ann. She was the human connection between our world at it’s best and the world of imagination.

The Marcella Delight Gruelle portrait doll was sculpted using drawings by her father as well as family photos. Marcella’s clothing and hair bow are typical of clothing styles of the early 1900’s.

The dress was designed by artist Mary Ann George in collaboration with Patty Hall, author and Gruelle family historian.
